with Elio Guarisco

This course is open to all and the Moxa points and techniques shown are useful for everyone whether practicing home healing or for people who already practice some kind of therapy.

Moxibustion is an external therapy that uses the power of heat to stimulate a curative effect. A widespread form of traditional healing in the East, moxibustion is one of the most ancient medical therapies known to humanity. Mainly popularized as a branch of Chinese medicine, moxibustion was originally practiced in Shang Shung, a kingdom predating Tibet whose existence can be traced back at least four thousand years.

The course is based on the book Healing with Fire which is a comprehensive compendium of the five hundred most important and effective moxibustion points in the Tibetan and Shang Shung system, with an emphasis on practical instructions for readers with varying levels of expertise in the healing arts. The book is the culmination of decades of painstaking research by Professor Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, a foremost scholar of Tibetan culture and philosophy, who, inspired by his personal experience of this unique and effective treatment method, has gathered knowledge from ancient scriptures ranging from the well-known Four Medical Tantras to recondite manuscripts found in the caves of Tun-Huang.

The Course

The moxibustion course is inspired by the work, and exhaustive research during the course of many years by Professor Namkhai Norbu, who studied and compared a large number of ancient sources of Tibetan moxibustion. The result of this research has now materialized in a manual of Moxibustion entitled The Clear Crystal Mirror, a Concise Guide to the Practice of Moxibustion (Healing with Fire).

In order to preserve and transmit such knowledge, at the request of Chogyal Namkai Norbu the Shang Shung Institute has organized a course in moxibustion in three levels. Three days of explanations and practice will be dedicated to each level for a total of nine days, and another three days will be dedicated to the review of the knowledge and experiential practice gained by the participants in the course.

During the course, the practice of moxibustion will be introduced along with the basic principles of Tibetan medicine. Five hundred points of moxibustion will be described together with their therapeutic indications. And the various methods will be taught and practically applied. As a complement to the main subject matter, various other ancillary external therapies will also be learned.

Thus, in an era in which medical care depends more and more on machines both for diagnosis and for treatments, the ancient knowledge of moxibustion offers a method of healing that anyone can apply for him or herself in any given circumstance.

This is a unique possibility to learn Tibetan moxibustion and is the first time that this course has taken place in the UK.

Elio Guarisco has studied this method in a practical way with Professor Norbu and will pass this experience on through this three part course.
